Am I Dreaming?

I stared at the sheet of paper in front of me. The notes and music filled my brain. As if someone switched a button on in my mind. Memorizing the last words I sighed and sat down in a cream colored lounge chair. Names were called and girls and boys filed into the audition room. All wanting the same thing. To be on Broadway. My brown locks fell into my face. My mothers fingers pulled them away from my blue eyes. “You will do fine.” Her words repeated in my head. As if I played them on my IPod on a loop. My shaky hands rested the paper on my thigh. A lady with golden hair, green eyes, and a red dress and heels called a name from her clipboard. “Alexa Siemens.” My brain became a tornado as I nervously stood up and followed her behind the brown wood door. The door of my doom.

We passed three closed doors until she led me into a beige room with a big mirror and a ballet bar in the back. A foldable table lay at the opposite side of the room with 3 chairs filled and one left open. This is where the woman would sit. The people introduced themselves. First, a man with red hair and gray-black eyes introduced himself. His name was Mark Julians. He wore a brown sweater and blue jeans. Next, the woman I had met before introduced herself, her name was Grace Julians and was married to Mark. They wrote the show. Then, a woman with black circular glasses told me her name was Alicia Simon, she was the director for the show. She had gray hair made up into a nice bun. She wore a purple dress and skirt with tights underneath. She also wore and overcoat with different Playbills on it. She had black heels that clicked when she swayed her feet on the floor. Last, a young man named Gabe Julians introduced himself. He was the Mark and Grace’s son. He had dirty blond hair and blue eyes like me. He wore a concert t-shirt that had a logo of a band on it. He wore faded jeans and Nike sneakers. He was the assistant manager and he wrote the show with his parents.

They asked me to introduce myself, my age, a fun fact about myself, and who I was auditioning for next. “My name is Alexa Siemens and I am 12 years old, I live in Hoboken, New Jersey and I am a professional dancer, I also do many theatre shows at home. I am auditioning for Gina and that’s all.” I nervously blurted out. Gina was the lead girl. The show was about a Gina and one of her neighbors, an old man called Mr.J (because his name is to long and hard to pronounce.) He is a painter and she is a dancer. They become very good friends after Gina is forced to meet him for tea. Then over time they become like family to each other. He then in the end dies and gives her the finished product of a portrait he was working on of her. I was singing the song Gina sings after Mr. J dies. Alicia nodded and Gabe turned the music on from a phone. I took a big breath and started singing. My words came out soft but at the same time sad, it sounded as if I was crying. By the end I was belting out Gina’s feeling and pretending to be crying as I was supposed to. The last note on a keyboard was played and the room went silent. I stared at my black converse for a moment and then the directors started clapping. I looked up and Gabe had a smile from ear to ear. I found my confidence and bowed. Grace stood up and led me to the waiting room to pick up the next contestant.

A week later I got an email as I was typing a report for school. The call backs were a week ago and they were fantastic. Better than the audition. I saw the name Julians on the top and my fingers froze. As if someone stopped time. I called my family upstairs and we prepared to read the email. “Don’t expect to get the part when you read the Email Alexa” my father said, “You don’t want to get your hopes too high.” I nodded and opened my mail. I opened the email, it said:

I stared at the cast list in amazement. I had done it! I had made it to broadway! My parents hugged me and my older brother slapped me on the back. It hurt but I didn’t care, I was so happy. My parents grabbed my Mom’s phone and had me dial in the number, 123-456-7890. My parents talked to a Julian and then handed the phone to me. Grace began speaking in my ear “Congrats Alexa.” “Thank You” I replied “I just want to know why did you choose me, out of everyone else?” “You hid the nervousness you had and became Gina. You tried your best and overall nailed everything.”Thank YOU.” I made sure to emphasize on the You part. “Well I have to go Alexa, can we meet on a Friday at your school, during the day, I need to talk to your teacher.” “Okay.” I said, how did she know where my school was?? I hung up the phone and waited until Friday.

On Friday my name went over the loud speaker, “Alexa Siemens please report to the main office, Alexa Siemens.” I jumped out of my seat and went to the main office. Where Grace and Gabe met me, talking to my principal. Gabe waved me over as I noticed that Mark Julians was my principal this WHOLE TIME! That is how Grace knew where my school was. We walked upstairs three flights, all three of us panting and laughing as we talked. At my classroom my teacher Mr. Smith talked to us outside. I would be leaving the school today permanently. I went inside to tell all of my classmates and Grace, Mark, and Gabe cleaned out my desk with me and I said goodbye to everyone. We walked out of the school excited. Though, a fog still held over my head. I was going to miss my regular life. This was going to be an adventure I was excited for.
